GFX100S II vs X-T5

Is medium format worth three times the price?

Short answer

The GFX100S II has a 102MP medium format sensor nearly four times the area of the X-T5’s APS-C chip, with eight stops of stabilisation. The X-T5 is a third of the price, half the weight, and far faster at 20 fps against 4.1 fps.

Which one to buy

Medium format buys tonal gradation, depth-of-field rendering and files that survive large printing and heavy retouching. It costs speed, weight, money and lens choice. If your work is printed large, retouched commercially, or specified by a client, the GFX100S II earns it. For everything else — travel, street, events, anything with movement — the X-T5 is not a compromise, it is the correct tool, and the three thousand dollars saved buys three excellent lenses.

Common questions

Will anyone see the difference on a screen?

No. On a phone or a laptop the two are indistinguishable. The format shows in prints and in how far a file can be pushed.

Do film simulations work the same?

Yes, and the GFX100S II has twenty against the X-T5’s nineteen.
