X100VI vs X100V

Stabilisation, 40 megapixels and three film simulations.

Short answer

The X100VI adds six stops of in-body stabilisation, a 40.2MP sensor and three film simulations the X100V lacks. The lens, viewfinder and handling are identical. Buy the VI for indoor and evening work; buy a used V to save money if you shoot in daylight.

Which one to buy

If you photograph indoors, at dusk or at events, the stabiliser alone justifies the X100VI — two extra stops of hand-holdability on a fixed f/2 lens changes what the camera can do. If you shoot in daylight and do not crop hard, a used X100V takes a picture you will not be able to tell apart, for several hundred dollars less.

Common questions

Is the lens different?

No. Both use the redesigned 23mm f/2 introduced on the X100V in 2020.

Which film simulations does the X100V miss?

REALA ACE, Nostalgic Neg. and ETERNA Bleach Bypass. None can be added by firmware.
