These are built aorund the way a manual lens is used: a focus ring with a long, damped throw and hard stops, meant to be set rather than hunted with. On a mirrorless body with focus peaking and magnification that is a workable way to shoot at these apertures, where depth of field is thin enough that autofocus often picks the wrong eyelash anyway. The 35mm f/0.9 covers 53mm equivalent, which makes it a standard lens with almost no depth of field at all.
