Short answer
The GFX 50S was Fujifilm’s first medium format mirrorless camera, launched in 2017 with a 51.4MP sensor, a detachable viewfinder and the G mount. It has 15 film simulations and no in-body stabilisation.
Fujifilm had made medium format film cameras for decades and then walked away from the segment. The GFX 50S brought it back digitally, and did it in a mirrorless body two-thirds the weight of the medium format DSLRs it competed with.

The detachable viewfinder
The EVF lifts off the top plate entirely, and an optional tilt adapter lets it angle upward for waist-level work. Removing it makes the camera flatter for travel and lets you compose on the tilting screen instead.
It is a genuinely useful piece of modularity that Fujifilm dropped from later GFX bodies.
What it started
The G mount, the 43.8 × 32.9mm sensor size and the whole GFX system. Every GFX lens made since fits this body, which means a used 50S is a cheap entry point into a lens system that is still growing.
Autofocus is contrast-detect and slow, burst is 3 fps, and video is 1080p. This is a tripod and studio camera.

Verdict
The GFX 50S is a used bargain for studio and landscape work. The GFX50S II is a better camera in a better body, but costs more; if you work on a tripod, the difference shrinks.

Common questions
Can I use modern GFX lenses on the 50S?
Yes. Every G-mount lens released since 2017 mounts and works, including the newer ones designed for 102MP bodies.
GFX 50S or GFX 50R?
Same sensor and processor. The 50S has the detachable viewfinder and a deeper grip; the 50R is flatter and lighter with a corner finder.
