Fujifilm X half

Short answer
The X half is a vertical-format compact with a 17.7MP 1-inch sensor and a 32mm-equivalent f/2.8 lens. Its Film Camera Mode locks you into one film simulation for a 36, 54 or 72-frame roll and hides the results until you finish. It has 13 film simulations.
Half-frame film cameras shot two vertical images on one 35mm frame, which doubled the shots per roll and made photography casual. The X half is Fujifilm’s digital answer, and it is the only camera in the lineup designed around a restriction rather than a capability.

Film Camera Mode
You choose a film simulation and a roll length of 36, 54 or 72 frames. The camera then locks the simulation, hides the rear screen preview and gives you a frame counter and a wind lever to advance. You cannot see the pictures until the roll is finished and you develop it in the app.
It is a gimmick and it also works. Removing the ability to check every frame changes how you shoot in a way that no amount of self-discipline manages.
Vertical by design
The sensor is mounted vertically, so the natural orientation is portrait. That is unusual and mostly pleasant: it matches how phone photographs are shot and viewed, and it makes the two-frame diptych feature — pairing two shots side by side into one image — feel natural rather than bolted on.
What it cannot do
The sensor is 1-inch, not APS-C, so low light is noticeably weaker than any X Series body. Video stops at Full HD. There is no PRO Neg., no ETERNA Bleach Bypass and none of the Monochrome family — 13 simulations rather than 20.
Battery life is excellent at 880 frames, which suits a camera you carry for a whole day without thinking about it.

Verdict
The X half is not a camera you buy on specifications. It is a camera you buy because you want photography to feel like a game again. If that sounds indulgent, an X-M5 gives you far more capability for less money.

How many film simulations does the X half have?

Can I see the pictures before the roll ends?
Not in Film Camera Mode. In ordinary shooting mode the camera behaves like any other compact and shows you every frame.
