Short answer

The X-Pro3 is a rangefinder-style body with a hybrid optical and electronic viewfinder and a rear screen that folds away, leaving only a small display showing your film simulation. It has 17 film simulations and was the first camera with Classic Negative.

The X-Pro3 is the most argued-about camera Fujifilm has made. Folding the main screen against the body is either a thoughtful push toward shooting like a film photographer or a deliberate obstacle, depending on who you ask. Both readings are fair.

The hidden screen

The main LCD faces inward. What you see on the back is a small colour panel showing the film simulation, ISO and white balance, styled after the box-end tab you used to slot into a film back.

In use it stops you chimping. You shoot, and you look at the pictures later. Some people find their hit rate improves. Others find it maddening when they need to check focus on a tripod, and they are not wrong either.

Where Classic Negative started

Classic Negative launched on this camera, and the X-Pro3 is still a pleasant way to shoot it. What it does not have is Nostalgic Neg., ETERNA Bleach Bypass or REALA ACE, which arrived on later bodies. Seventeen simulations in total.

Buying one now

It is discontinued, so the market is used. The titanium versions carry a premium; the standard black body is the sensible buy.

Check the screen hinge, which was the mechanism most people worried about, and check the shutter count. There is no in-body stabilisation and video is a 2019 specification, so buy it for stills or do not buy it.

Verdict

The X-Pro3 is a specialist. If the hidden screen sounds appealing rather than annoying, it is one of the most enjoyable cameras to shoot on the used market. If it sounds annoying, believe yourself and buy an X-E5.
